TISSINGTON TRAIL

The Tissington trail runs from Ashbourne to Parsley Hay a distance of 13 miles. At Parsley Hay it joins the High Peak trail, which runs from High Peak Junction to Dowlow.

The Tissington Trail was formerly the track of the Ashbourne to Buxton line. It was finally fully opened on August 4th 1899. The last section of the line was officially closed on October 2nd 1967. (Yes folks, another Dr. Beeching disaster!) After the removal of the track bed, it was decided to turn the disused railway into a "pleasant and grassy surface" for recreational purposes. This scheme was to become known as the "Tissington Trail" and was to be one of the first experiments of its kind in the country. The trail was opened to the public from June 5th 1971.

Today, you can walk, cycle or ride a horse all year round on this wonderful traffic free trail. You will enjoy fantastic scenic views through the limestone countryside of the White Peak. Visiting in Spring and Summer will reward you with the sight of endless wild flowers and the butterflies which depend upon them.

The trail is mostly flat with only one steep incline just north of Mapleton Lane. Refreshments and cycle hire are available at Parsley Hay and Mapleton Lane.
